UAW strike started today.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And the Teamsters has said they wouldn’t cross the strike line and won’t deliver vehicles for GM.

Not sure why I can’t edit my post, but I meant to add the Teamsters article link as well

how long do you think it will go on for?

My guess is once dealer inventory levels start getting too low.
https://www.autonews.com/sales/automakers-inventory-high-uaw-walks-job
Right now they are rather high for GM and across the board. If I remember right most dealers want to be around 40-50 days of inventory. So once dealer levels start dropping below that I bet we’ll start seeing something happen.

See? I was right! The Mid engine corvette IS a myth. It will never happen

Of course it won’t happen. Chevy can never compete with Porch.

That would be the exact opposite of what I need... I will get my car even if I have to go to the assembly plant and build it myself.

The workers refuse to build it auto-only. They’ll resume to work for a manual version.

Well the strike made my ride into metro Detroit this morning a breeze.
If it lasts longer than a week I’ll be surprised but I didn’t expect a national strike I thought they’d just close a truck plant or 2.
Still waiting for Jones to get indicted too and wait till Trump starts tweeting about this. Grab your popcorn everyone.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Both parties are arguing the semantics of plant “ closings” vs “un-allocated” plants.

I’m actually thinking the strike will last until dealer inventories start getting short. I think GM may have purposely presented a deal they knew wouldn’t be approved, this way they get to temporarily “close” plants down without being the bad guy in the news.

UAW has a deal in place with Ford & FCA already, which says to me that GM is not being straight forward with them. Then again, GM has made one boneheaded decision after another since bailed them out: Cadillac in general, the ELR, cancelling the Volt, having no modular platforms to build on, discontinuing brands and models, the continued bastardization of legacy model names, etc.
And yet, they have to survive because of a multitiered global supply chain would collapse. Then right back to recession or worse.

“ Close: (of a business, organization, or institution) cease to be in operation or accessible to the public, either permanently or at the end of a working day or other period of time.”
GM ceased operations and has no plans for the plants, un- allocated my ass lol.
Un-allocated implies (in my mind at least) they are ceasing operations temporarily to the then allocate that to something else afterwards.

I don’t know about that they temporarily clase plants alot. Everyone seems focused on dealer inventory but in a national strike no dealer parts are being delivered or R and d. Seems expensive way to reduce inventory but who knows.

GM is not being straight forward with them
I said this in another reply, but I almost feel like GM’s proposal was purposely bad to force a strike. Dealer inventories are pretty high right now for GM and across the industry in general. This way t
hey get to shutdown production for a bit without being the bad guy in the news.

They have done it in the past

Agreed. Side note: I started my post more than 90 minutes prior but equipment malfunction and a meeting forced me to wait to finish it.
Mondays amirite?!

Yeah that’s was a temporary layoff not a strike. Happened alot in the 90s when the Uaw had a job bank.

That’s what I meant, GM has closed plants temporarily in the past. It’s just a guess though, who knows what actually is going on. It very well could be GM just being GM and simply screwing up.

Or the Union , who knows how all this is going to go is the truth.

UAW has a deal in place with Ford & FCA alre ady,
IIRC it’s not a “deal” so much is they’re continuing under extension of the current contract until a deal is reached with GM.

“I have an idea.”

You’re simply wrong. The UAW chose to negotiate with GM first as to use that negation as a template for contract talks with FCA and Ford. In the interim the current FCA and Ford contracts have been extended until such time that GM negations are concluded.
